ERICSSON R380: THE DEFFINITIVE GUIDE
By Garth Pyper

Introduction

The Ericsson R380 is looking better and better every time I see more of it. At first I had reservations about its durability having owned phones in the past with similar flip down design however after getting a better look this looks like one tough and functional phone. Its overall appearance is not much different than it's little brother the Ericsson R320, but if you look under the hood it's a whole different story.

The PDA which includes features such as notepad, e-mail, SMS, address book, calendar, and one hell of a big browser, uses the EPOC operating system from Symbian. The EPOC operating system is already in use in the Psion line of PDA's and provides a clean and simple interface. The screen itself is touch sensitive and a stylus is included with the handset attached to the back of the phone.

Gone are the days of tapping the number 2 button until c pops up - the r380 features handwriting recognition and an onscreen touch keyboard. The touch sensitive capabilities of the display do double duty in the keypad closed position by transmitting the press of a button directly to the surface of the display.

Some of the other functions are worth mentioning, including voice dialing and answering, a voice note recorder, as well as the fact that it will ship with a full communications suite on cd-rom and a RS-232.
